AI Workflows for Private Equity Deal Teams, Built on Your Firm's Record

James O'Dwyer

Metal provides seven out-of-the-box workflows cover the deal team's work from first read to investment committee. Each run reads from the firm's Context Graph and writes its reviewed result back, so the next deal starts from a fuller record.
What Does a Context Layer Change for Deal Teams?
The work still happens. What changes is the data layer underneath.
Metal brings your firm's own history, record, and judgment into every step: prior looks at the company, comparable deals the firm has evaluated, and the reasoning behind each decision.
Daily task | Today | With Metal |
|---|---|---|
First read of a CIM | An associate writes the summary, or pastes the CIM into a chat assistant that sees the document but not the firm's pipeline | A write-up in the firm's own format, with the CIM scored against the firm's frameworks and its pipeline |
Data room review | Folders split among analysts, findings tracked in a spreadsheet, the request list written from what each person happened to read | A first pass on the whole room: inventory, findings, and a prioritized request list before the team decides where to dig |
Expert calls | Transcripts sit in a library or an inbox, and each call is summarized on its own | One brief across every call on file for the target, organized by the questions diligence has to answer |
Comparables | Depends on who remembers the similar business the firm looked at three years ago | Comparable deals from the firm's own record, with the reasons each one matched |
Revenue quality | Bridges rebuilt by hand from the customer file | Revenue bridges by customer, product, region, or segment, with growth, churn, and expansion separated |
The IC memo | Assembled section by section from the CIM, the model, call notes, and diligence reports | A comprehensive draft, from merits and risks to diligence mitigants, built on the same record as every workflow before it |
IC preparation | Whoever plays skeptic reads the memo the night before | The strongest case against the memo, each point tested against the documents and the firm's past deals |
What Out-of-the-Box AI Workflows Does Metal Offer Private Equity Deal Teams?

Metal ships seven out-of-the-box workflows, each built around a question the investment committee will ask. The workflows all read from and write back to the same Context Graph. Each one is shaped to the firm: its templates, scoring frameworks, sector taxonomy, and review steps.
When a process is unique to the firm, its team builds the workflow in Metal’s Workflow Builder, working alongside Metal to take it into production. The workflow stays the firm’s own. Its team edits the steps, decides who approves each run, and can restore any earlier version.
Workflow | Where it fits | What the deal team gets |
|---|---|---|
CIM Write Up | CIM review | A structured write-up in the firm's format, plus a score against its own frameworks |
VDR Analysis | Confirmatory diligence | A first pass on the full room: inventory, findings, and a prioritized request list |
Expert Call Summary | Diligence | One diligence brief across every expert call on file for the target, organized by question |
Benchmarking Agent | Evaluation through IC | The target compared to sector peers and to how the firm's own comparable deals played out |
Data Analysis · Revenue Bridges | Evaluation and diligence | Three-year revenue bridges separating growth, churn, and expansion |
IC Memo Creation | IC preparation | A full memo draft: overview, merits and risks, financials, market, diligence areas with mitigants, and executive summary |
IC Devil's Advocate | IC preparation | The strongest case against the memo, cited to the page |
CIM Write Up: Every CIM Read to Your Firm's Standard
CIM Write Up produces a structured write-up of each incoming confidential information memorandum, covering the business, its financial profile, and the key considerations, in the format the firm already uses internally. When the CIM is linked to a company, Metal can also screen it in the CIM Library, extracting financials and scoring it against the firm's own frameworks.
What you get:
A write-up in the firm's template, reviewed by the deal team before it is saved to the record
Extracted financials and element-level scores, with the reasoning behind each score
An overall score benchmarked against the firm's pipeline at the overall, sector, and subsector level
The score frames the first conversation. The team still decides which deals earn a second look.
VDR Analysis: A First Pass on the Whole Data Room
VDR Analysis reads every document in a virtual data room folder. It does not need the deal team to know what to look for in advance, so the gaps show up before anyone has decided where to dig.
What you get:
A first-pass analysis document covering the inventory, key findings, and initial analyses
A DRL spreadsheet, with the most critical requests marked Tier 1
A dashboard that measures completeness against your standard private equity data room categories and states whether the room supports the next decision
The data room comes in through the firm's connected file storage, such as Egnyte or SharePoint, or by direct upload. VDR Analysis tells the team what the room contains and what it is missing. Whether those gaps matter to the thesis stays the team's call.
Expert Call Summary: What the Experts Said, Organized by Diligence Question
Expert Call Summary finds the expert call transcripts on file for a target company and generates a structured PE diligence brief.
What you get:
A synthesis across every interview on file for the target, with the number of calls and the period they span
A read on expert sentiment: how many calls came out positive, mixed, or negative
Answers grouped by diligence question, each traced to the expert behind itBecause the brief states how many interviews it draws on and when they took place, the team can judge how much weight its conclusions carry.
Benchmarking Agent: Compare the Target to Deals Your Firm Has Already Seen
Benchmarking Agent benchmarks a company against comparable peers in its sector, using financial data, the firm's knowledge graph, expert calls, and CRM deal history. It returns a comparable deals benchmark that shows how the peer set performs, how far each comparable got in the firm's own process, and what the firm learned from it.
A customized template include:
A comps table covering revenue, EBITDA, margin, three-year organic growth, customer concentration, and retention, with averages across the set
For each comparable, how far it went in the firm's process, from sourced through IC to closed, with the result, valuation, base case, and deal team on record
A lesson learned for each comparable: where the firm stopped before, why, and what to confirm before committing diligence to this one
An executive summary that flags thin firm history or a record that may be mismatched, instead of filling the gap
Figures that are not sourced from the firm's data are marked as illustrative, so they are checked before any external use. A firm that passed on a similar business at screening sees that decision, the note behind it, and who owned it before it prices this one.
Data Analysis · Revenue Bridges: See Where the Revenue Came From
Data Analysis · Revenue Bridges turns customer-level revenue data into three-year revenue bridges that separate growth, churn, and expansion. Bridges can be cut by customer, product line, region, or segment, so the team can see which parts of the business carry the thesis and which are drifting.
Year-over-year bridges with summary trends
Breakdowns by customer, product, region, or segment
One set of revenue numbers that IC preparation and later portfolio work can start from
A bridge is only as good as the revenue file behind it, so the team checks inputs against the quality of earnings report before it relies on the output.
IC Memo Creation: A Full Draft of the Memo, Built on the Firm's Record
IC Memo Creation drafts a comprehensive investment committee memo for business services and healthcare services investments. The memo covers the company overview, investment merits and risks, financials, market analysis, diligence areas with their mitigants, and an executive summary. You can download the output in pptx format.
Because it runs on the same Context Graph as the workflows before it, the draft starts from what the team has already established on the deal. The deal team still owns the argument and the recommendation.
IC Devil's Advocate: Pressure-Test the Memo Before IC Does
IC Devil's Advocate argues the case against the deal team's own memo. Upload the memo and supporting documents, and it returns the five matters that most need to be true, the evidence for and against each, and how the firm's past deals bear on this one, cited to the page. The decision stays with IC.
